Ellora Tours
The Ajanta and Ellora caves are located in proximity to the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra. These caves are a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site now. The caves are acknowledged for their classical Indian art representations. Ellora caves are carved out from a big mountain. Through the steps climb upto the cave entrance and enter the realm of perfect art.
Ellora caves are near Ajanta caves. They were built after Ajanta caves. Ellora has 34 caves in total. There are 12 Buddhist caves, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain caves. Ellora paintings are worldlier than Ajanta Caves.
The most important Hindu cave is cave no. 16 or the Kailasha Temple. The temple is carved out of a single piece of rock. There is a sculpture of Ravana attempting to lift the Mount Kailash (sacred mountain-abode of Gods), so the Temple is named Kailasha Temple. The Temple is adorned with the scriptures of Mahabharata and Ramayana.
The Kailasha Temple has a sculpture of river goddesses and guardians at the Temple Gate. Towards the right passage there is a statue of Goddess Durga and towards left Ganesha's statue represents fine artistic skill of the artisans.
Caves from 1 to 12 numbers are Buddhist caves. Cave no.10 (Vishwakarma Cave), 11(Do Tal) and 12 (Teen Tal) are important caves. The paintings on the walls are made by tempera technique and colors prepared from natural products were used to paint them.
