Covering an area of 3245 square kilometers, Barpeta is famous for its religious importance. It is known by various names like Mathura, Tatikuchi, Porabhita, Icchakuchi, Choukhutisthan, Vrindavan, Nabaratna-Sabha, Pushpak Vimana and Kampur.
Barpeta is also known as the Land of the Satras. Shrimanta Sankardeva's disciples established a large number of Satras. The Satras regularly visited by the tourists are Barpeta, Patbaushi, Sundaridiya, Sunpura, GanakKuchi, Satra Kanara and Jania.
Pari Hareshwar Devalaya, Dubi is temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Queen Fuleswari, wife of Shiva Singha brought Devdasis from Upper Assam to perform dances for amusement of the deities of this Temple.
Dargah of Syed Shahnur Dewan in Bhella is a famous landmark of the district. It is believed that a disciple of Muslim Sufi Saint Ajan Fakir, Syed Shahnur Dewan possessed healing powers and he cured maternity problem of Queen Fuleswari.
Manas National Park is located at the foothills of Himalayas. It has unique biodiversity and scenic landscapes. It covers an area of 2837 kilometers. This beautiful National Park houses a number of wild animals, birds and plants.
Brass Metal Factory of Sarthebari is another popular attraction of Barpeta. This industry produces Sarais, Bota, Ban-Batis, Thalis and glasses etc that are the traditionally used articles of Assamese people.
