Festivals in Assam
India is a land of Festivals. So there are a number of Fairs and Festivals held in every part of India. There are six festivals organized by the Government of Assam every year. The festivals are a reflection of the culture of a particular region.
Elephant Festival
The Government of Assam along the Forest Department and Tourism organizes Elephant Festival at Kaziranga National Park every year for the conservation and protection of Asiatic Elephant.
Brahmaputra Beach Festival
This festival is held on the beaches of mighty River Brahmaputra. The festival features adventure sports like elephant race, kite flying, rafting, wind surfing, canoeing, kayaking, para dropping, hot air ballooning, beach volleyball and beach cricket.
Dehing Patkai Festival
Dehing Patkai Festival derives its name from the lofty Patkai range and cheerful Dehing River. The festival is organized in the month of January. The tourists are taken on trips to World War II cemeteries and the Stilwell Road. The specialty of the festival is adventures sports, golfing, tea heritage tours and wildlife excursion.
Tea Festival
Tea is the specialty of Assam. Every year in the month of January and February, Tea festival is held at Jorhat (Tea Capital of Assam).
Bihu Utsav
Bihu is the main festival of Assam. Just as Pongal in South and Bhangra in Punjab, Bihu is the harvest festival of northeastern state of Assam. It marks the beginning of the agricultural season. The festival spreads colors and happiness all around. Bihu can be divided into three categories: Bohag Bihu is a festival in which people make wish for good harvest, as this is the sowing period, Kaati Bihu is a festival at the time for cutting the produce and Magh Bihu is a festival of harvesting.
