Sibsagar is located at a distance of 369 kilometers from Gawahati. The nearest airport is at Rewriah, Jorhat (55 kilometers). The nearest railway station is Simaluguri at a distance of 16 kilometers. This historic city of Sibsagar was once the home of puissant Ahoms who ruled for over 600 years. One of the major attractions of this place is 200-year-old Sibsagar Tank. The banks of this tank houses famous temples: The Shivdol (built in 1734), Vishnudol and the Devidol. There are also Muslim Dargahs, Buddhist and Sakta shrines nearby Sibsagar.
Two historic monuments were built by King Rudra Singha during 1696-1714 AD namely Kareng Ghar and Talatal Ghar served as a military station of the Ahom Kings. At a distance of about 6 kilometers from Sibsagar is a seven storeyed palace - three of which below the ground level are known as Talatal Ghar. Gargaon Palace is at a distance of 13 kilometers east of Sibsagar. Today it is known as Kareng Ghar.
Rang Ghar was an amphitheatre built by King Pramatta Singha. Joysagar is supposed to be the largest artificial lake in India. It sprawls over an area of 318 acres. Ahom Museum situated on the banks of Sibsagar Lake, exhibits clothes, swords, manuscripts, goblets and platters used by the Ahom rulers.
