Manipur literally means the land of jewels. In this beautiful land approximately 29 tribes inhabit in harmony. The tribes recognized by the Government are Mao, Anal, Angami, Maram, Chiru, Kom, Chothe, Gangte, Hmar, Kabui, Maring, Kacha Naga, Koirao/Thangal, Aimol, Koireng, Lamkang, Lushai (Mizo), Monsang, Moyon, Paite, Purum, Ralte, Salte, Sema, Simte, Thadou, Tangkhul, Vaiphei and Zou.
Each Tribe has a different set of laws and customs. Nonetheless, there are some common practices like the practice of jhum cultivation. Rice is the staple food and main crop of the tribals. Generally the people dwell atop the hill. Hunting is a common feature of the tribals.
The main occupation of the tribals is agriculture. They are not fully developed even in this field. The traditional methods of farming are practiced here. Handicraft items of the tribes are famous all over the world. They possess excellent hand skills and produce amazing products.
The tribals of Lushai (Mizo), Paite and Ralte are even found in Mizoram, Tripura and other northeastern states.
