Tribal Tours to Meghalaya
The three main tribes of Meghalaya are Garo, Khasis and Jaintia. These three tribes dwell on the mountain ranges of Garo, Khasi and Jaintia.
Garo tribes are also called as Achik Tribes. The language of Garos belongs to Bodo group of the Tibeto-Burma family. The language of Khasis belongs to the Mon-Khmer family of Austric affiliation. Garo people call themselves Chik or Mande. This area experiences heavy rainfall. 10 to 60 houses make up one Garo village.
For agriculture these people use slash and burn technique. The most common crops grown in the fields are rice, millet, and bananas, along with a variety of vegetables. In these tribes women enjoy a much higher status than men. Male offspring leaves the house of the parents at puberty and is trained in a common village Bachelor dormitory called a nokpante.
Khasi tribe resides on Khasi hills. These people call themselves Hynniew trep. These people are mostly Roman Catholic or Presbyterians. The Khasi tribes cultivate jhoom and Betel leaf. Just like Garo this tribe is also matrilineal. Khasi people worship U Blei (the God).
Jaintia Kingdom extends from Shillong Plateau to the North of River Barak. This region came under the influence of Kachari and Ahoms.
