Tribal Dances of Tripura
There are eight tribal communities in Tripura. All the communities have their respective customs, traditions and dances. The culture of all the communities reflect rustic ambience.
Tripuris constitute a major portion of the tribal population. They live on the hill slopes in groups of five to fifty families. Two popular dances of Tripuris are Garia and Lebang Boomani Dance. Garia Dance is performed at the time of Jhoom season (shifting cultivation). At the time of sowing people perform Garia Puja for a good harvest and they sing and dance to make their deity happy. Lebang Boomani Dance is performed when the people await onset of monsoon and colorful insects Lebang visit the fields. Tripuri women in groups sing songs and catch these insects.
Reang Community is the second largest community in tribal Tripura. The theme of the dance is the same - praying for a good produce. The Reang Community performs Hozagiri dance. The dance steps however, are somewhat different. The movements in this dance are concentrated on the lower portion of the body.
Chakma Community performs Bizu dance. (Chaitra Sakranti). It is the end of Bengali year. People dance to the melodious notes played by Khenggarang and Dhukuk sorts of flutes.
Halam Community perform Hai-Hak dance at the end of harvest festival. The community worships Goddess Lakshmi.
Garo Community perform Wangala dance. A pumpkin is sacrificed as a part of the ritual. After this women dance to Dama or Aaduri made of buffalo horn.
Lushai girls perform a Welcome dance to greet any visitor paying visit to their home.
Darlong community performs Cheraw dance. All the relatives of a pregnant woman perform this dance on the last stage of her pregnancy. They believe that if the woman dies during the childbirth she will go 6to heaven with courage, confidence and joy gained because of the beats of bamboo dance.
Mog community celebrates Way (Lamp) Festival. It is celebrated on the full moon day according to Bengali calendar.
