Bodh Gaya is a place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment under the sacred Asvatta tree (Bodhi tree) and became known as Lord Buddha. It is one of the four most important pilgrim places for Buddhists. It is located at a distance of 13 kilometers from Gaya, 450 kilometers west of Calcutta and 90 kilometers south of Patna.
Ashoka erected Mahabodhi Temple. It has a 50-meter tower. The damage to the temple was restored in 1880. Muslims in the 11th century destroyed the previous temple. There is a huge idol of Buddha in the centre of the temple. Lord Buddha is the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. So the temple is sacred to both Hindus as well as Buddhists.
Bodhi Tree is a said to be a descendent of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. The tree is planted behind the temple and is about 80 feet high and 115 years old.
Chankaramana is the sacred spot of the Buddha's meditative strolls during the third week after pious enlightenment. Legend says that wherever the Buddha put his feet, lotus sprang up.
