Kanchipuram Pilgrimage Tours

Kanchipuram is one of the seven holy cities of India. The city is situated at a distance of 70 kilometers from Chennai in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was once the historical capital of Pallavas. Later, it became the citadel of Cholas, Vijaynagar Kings, Muslims and the British. The city is also famous for its intricately worked and finest silk sarees.

Tamil learning, culture and religion flourished here. Famous personalities like Sri Shankaracharya, Appar, Siruthonder and the great Budddhist Bhikku resided in this picturesque city.

The architectural splendor of the city is reflected in the magnificently built temples that stand till date as a testimony to the bygone glorious Dravidian heritage. During the reign of Pallavas, in 6th and 7th centuries, some of the best temples were built in the city.

Kamakshi Amman Temple is the most famous temple of Kanchipuram. It is dedicated to Goddess Shakti. The Temple is located in proximity to Shankara Mutt. There is a Golden Chariot in the Temple that is taken in a procession around the temple on Friday evenings around 7.00 p.m. There is an Art Gallery exhibiting pictures depicting the history of Sri Adi Shankaracharya and the Shankara Mutt.

Kailashanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Rajasimha Pallava built this Temple during 8th century A.D. The Temple is situated at a distance of just one kilometer west of the town center. The Temple portrays 64 aspects of Lord Shiva.

Ekambareshwar Temple is one of the largest Temples of Kanchipuram. The Temple spreads over an area of 12.14 hectares. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the ancient Temples in India.

Other popular Temples in Kanchipuram are Kumara Kottam Temple, Varadaraja Temple and Ulahalanda Perumal Temple.
