Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi is a classical dance originated in Andhra Pradesh. Dances in India have been a medium to attain the Divine, as a thanksgiving to the Divine or as a prayer to God. During the course of time, there were changes in the dance forms. And the original themes or motives behind the dance performances were a bit molded and entertainment also became one of the themes.
Kuchipudi dance has derived its name from the village Kuchelapuram. Here great scholars and artists nurtured and refined the dance technique. Being a dance of peninsular India, Kuchipudi is accompanied by Carnatic music. The musical instruments accompanying Kuchipudi are mridangam, flute and violin.
The artists wear ornaments made of a lightweight wood called Boorugu. The technique involves fast rhythmic footwork. In between sometimes dialogues are spoken by the performers. Kuchipudi is performed in both solo and group presentation. Earlier it was performed a dance drama where dancers assumed different roles to enact stories. The themes of the dances are derived from mythological figures.
