Manipuri
Manipuri dance is one of the six classical dances of India. The dance belongs to the state of Manipur from where it got its name. Manipur means the land of jewels. The legend states that God drained the lake to find a place to dance.
Manipuri dance is purely religious. The dancing technique is to achieve rounded movements and avoiding any jerks. Manipuri dance follows the following principles: The places where dances are performed are held sacred. One cannot perform anytime and at anyplace. Dances are a ritualistic performance rather than being a source of entertainment. The performers wear specially designed dresses so that the performers are not seen with lust or greed.
While performing on the stage, it is taken care that there is no sound of tapping on the floor. Very smoothly feet are placed on the floor. The dancers do not even wear anklets.
The dancers play on the drums Pung while performing Pung Dance. Raas Leela is one of the ancient forms of dance drama staged here. Raas Leela is a dance of Lord Krishna with Radha and cowherd maidens. Sanskritana is also staged here.
The Lai Haroba is a ritualistic dance depicting the Creation. It is considered the precursor of Manipuri.
